A DREAM CAREER BEGINS

Potro Romano has already led a storied 22-year career as a professional wrestler. In this edition, we're going to present our wrestler profile in a new form.  This time, Potro will tell his story rather than a Q&A as has been our format in the past.  With that being said, it is my privilege to bring you Potro Romano and the story of his journey.

Growing up as a child, I always had an immense fascination for wrestling. The excitement, adrenaline, and the sheer spectacle of it all was enough to capture my imagination. It was a dream that I knew I would have to pursue, no matter what. Fast forward to today, I have been a part of this sport for over 22 years, with countless hours of training and dedication. My journey has been full of challenges, triumphs, and injuries, but it has been one of the most extraordinary experiences of my life. In this article, I will take you through my journey in the world of wrestling, from my early days working in small events in Mexico to my current goal of someday winning the Midget Wrestling Warriors World Championship.

The Early Days

I still remember the day I walked into my first wrestling class. It was April 30, 1998, and I was nervous and excited at the same time. My teachers were legends of the sport, such as Gran Apache, Dragon Chino, and second Olympus. They were tough and demanding, but also patient and understanding. They knew how to push us to our limits and bring out the best in us. I was hooked from the first day, and I knew that this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

My early days in wrestling were spent working in small events in Mexico and the USA. It was a difficult time, as I had to balance my love for wrestling with my studies and other responsibilities. But I never gave up, and I kept pushing myself to improve. I worked hard, listened to my coaches, and learned from my mistakes. It was a time of growth and learning, and I am grateful for the experience.

The Challenges

One of the biggest challenges I faced in my early days of wrestling was facing off against the Maximos, Puerto Rican wrestlers who were at a good level in their time. They were tough opponents, and it was a daunting experience to go up against them. Another challenge was participating in a triangular and having to remove my mask and reveal my face. It was a moment of vulnerability and courage, as my identity was revealed to the world. But I knew that this was a part of the sport, and I faced it with determination and resilience.

The Experience

My experience in the world of wrestling has been extraordinary. I have had the opportunity to compete with wrestlers that I saw on TV when I was a child, and it has been the best part of this journey. I have learned so much from my opponents and teammates, and I have grown as a wrestler and as a person. Wrestling has taught me discipline, focus, and resilience, and I am grateful for every moment of it.

The Training

Training is an essential part of wrestling, and I take it very seriously. I train with discipline in the gym, focusing on building strength and endurance. I also make sure to stay relaxed and calm, especially on the day of the event. It is important to have a clear mind and to be mentally prepared for the challenges ahead. My signature move that I use to finish a fight is the Michinoku driver, which I have perfected over the years through rigorous training and practice.

The Criticism

Criticism is a part of any sport, and wrestling is no exception. I take both good and bad criticism to improve within the sport. I don't see it as pressure, but rather as an opportunity to grow and learn. It is important to take feedback constructively and to use it to become a better wrestler.

Injuries

Injuries are an inevitable part of any contact sport, and I have had my fair share of them throughout my wrestling career. One of the stronger injuries that I have sustained was during an event when I hit my head on one of the fences. However, with the adrenaline pumping through my veins, I was able to continue until the end of the match. It was a tough experience, but it taught me the importance of staying focused and determined, no matter what obstacles come my way.

Future Goals

My goal for 2023 is to win the Midget Wrestling Warriors World Championship. I have been preparing with discipline, both in the gym and during wrestling practice, to get a chance at this goal. The MWW World Championship is the most prestigious title in wrestling, and I am determined to make it mine. I have been studying my opponents, analyzing their moves, and working on new techniques to surprise them in the ring. I know that it won't be easy, but I am willing to put in the hard work and dedication to make my dream a reality.

Outside The Ring

Wrestling is not my only occupation; I also work at a Mediterranean restaurant. I enjoy the fast-paced environment and the opportunity to meet new people. It's important to have other sources of income, especially in a sport like wrestling where injuries can sideline you at any moment. Working at the restaurant also helps me maintain a healthy work-life balance, which is essential for any athlete.

When I am not training or working, I love to go to the gym or the beach. The gym helps me stay in shape and maintain my strength and endurance, while the beach provides a relaxing escape from the rigors of wrestling. I enjoy exploring new places and learning about different cultures, which is why I try to visit as many places as possible. Traveling helps me broaden my horizons and gain new perspectives, which I can then apply to my wrestling career.

In addition to wrestling, I have several hobbies that keep me entertained in my free time. I enjoy watching the UFC, soccer, boxing, and of course, wrestling. Watching other athletes perform inspires me to work harder and be the best I can be. I am also interested in the future after my wrestling career ends. I hope to stay involved in the sport, perhaps as a referee for the Midget Wrestling Warriors. Being a referee would allow me to give back to the sport that has given me so much and to help the next generation of wrestlers achieve their dreams.

In conclusion, wrestling has been a significant part of my life for over 22 years, and I couldn't imagine doing anything else. The excitement, adrenaline, and rush of competing in the ring are unparalleled, and I am grateful for every opportunity I have had to step into the ring. The teachers who have taught me, the opponents who have challenged me, and the fans who have cheered me on have all played a role in my wrestling journey. I am excited to see what the future holds and look forward to continuing to pursue my dreams in wrestling and beyond.
